Orange County Surf Guide: Beginner Breaks, Local Favorites & Where to Catch Waves

Thinking of paddling out in Orange County? Whether you’re just getting started or planning a surf-inspired day at the beach, this guide highlights beginner-friendly spots, local favorites, and where to park, rent, and refuel along the coast.

Favorite Beginner & Family-Friendly Breaks

Blackies – Newport Beach
A year-round favorite for first-timers. Easy, consistent waves, metered parking nearby, and rentals along the boardwalk make it super accessible. Grab post-surf eats at Dory Deli or Banzai Bowls just steps away.

Doheny State Beach – Dana Point
A great beginner spot with mellow waves and a wide sandy beach. Rentals are available at Wheel Fun Rentals right by the beach, and there’s a paid parking lot for convenience.

Dog Patch – San Onofre
A laid-back, longboard-friendly break with a true community vibe. There’s a parking lot nearby (come early on weekends), and the mellow waves make it easy to spend the whole day in and out of the water.

Best Intermediate Breaks

Salt Creek – Dana Point
Punchy peaks and a scenic setting. It’s ideal for those ready to progress beyond beginner waves. On-site rentals and a grassy bluff above the beach make it easy to hang out between sessions.

Huntington Pier – Huntington Beach
A go-to for consistent surf and classic OC energy. Rentals, shops, and food options are all within walking distance. Metered parking and beachfront lots nearby.

Best Advanced Breaks

Lower Trestles – San Clemente
A performance wave for experienced surfers. It’s a walk-in only spot, but the payoff is world-class surf. No rentals on site—bring your own gear and plan for an early paddle-out. An obligatory stop at the famous Sancho's Tacos is a must!

The Wedge – Newport Beach
Known for its heavy, unpredictable shorebreak, The Wedge is strictly for expert surfers and fearless bodyboarders. Watch the action from the sand if you’re not ready to charge.

Surfboard Rentals & Lessons

Need gear or a little extra help getting started? Orange County is packed with surf schools and board rental shops. Popular options include:
• Newport Surf School (Newport Beach)
• San Clemente Surf School (San Clemente)
• Zack’s Surf Shop (Huntington Beach)

Most beginner beaches also offer surf lessons nearby, making it easy to book a lesson and paddle out the same day.

Surfing Laguna?

While the surf isn’t as reliable in Laguna Beach, it’s a haven for skimboarders. Head to Victoria Beach or Thousand Steps for a different kind of wave-riding—and bring a camera for the scenic cliffs and coves.

Culture & Coastline

Beyond the waves, Orange County’s surf culture is part of daily life. Local board shops are stocked with rentals and gear, while beachfront cafés, taco joints, and smoothie bars fuel the post-surf scene. Whether you’re grabbing a burrito in San Clemente or flipping through fins in Huntington (discover more Orange County beach towns here), the lifestyle is just as welcoming as the lineup.
